Mathematics is the largest area of the Online Bocconi Test: 24 of the 50 questions, mixed with the other areas in a single 75-minute sitting. Bocconi lists twelve subject areas, from algebra and analytic geometry to conditional probability and Bayes' theorem.

Mathematics can decide the whole test: the minimum total score is 17, and applicants to Mathematical and Computing Sciences for AI also need at least 11/24 here. The Law version of the test has only 5 mathematics questions (plane and analytic geometry, sets and numbers).

These figures are derived from the past-exam question samples that have reached us; the samples may be incomplete or contain errors, and the topic mix can change from one exam session to the next. Treat them as a guide to priorities, not a prediction of your exam.

Key Takeaways

  • Algebra is the largest block (about 1 in 4 bank questions): equations, inequalities, systems and absolute values.
  • Probability, combinatorics and statistics together make up almost a third — conditional probability and Bayes are explicitly in the outline.
  • Parabolas, lines and circles are a Bocconi signature: the relative position of a line and a parabola comes up again and again.
  • Trigonometry and plane geometry are rare — learn the core formulas, then move on.

Bocconi Mathematics Topics: How Each Is Tested

A topic-by-topic look at the Mathematics section of the official Online Bocconi Test outline:

01

Algebra & Numbers Medium

  • Polynomials, powers and radicals; expressing one quantity as a function of others.
  • 1st and 2nd degree equations, inequalities and systems, including absolute values.
  • Order properties of real numbers, percentages and unit conversions.

How it appears on Bocconi: Rearranging formulas, quadratic inequalities and ‘which number is largest?’ comparisons. Distractors come from sign errors and squaring both sides carelessly.

02

Functions, Logarithms & Exponentials Medium

  • Function, inverse function and composition.
  • Graphs of powers, logarithms, exponentials and absolute value.
  • Exponential and logarithmic equations and inequalities, including graphical solutions.

How it appears on Bocconi: Matching a formula to its graph and counting solutions graphically (‘how many times does 2x2^x meet x+2x + 2?’).

03

Plane & Analytic Geometry Medium

  • Formulas for triangles, circles, squares, trapezoids and rhombuses.
  • Points, distances and lines: slope, parallel and perpendicular lines, intersections.
  • Parabolas and circles, and their relative position with a line.

How it appears on Bocconi: Tangency and intersection conditions via the discriminant of the combined equation — the most typical Bocconi geometry item.

04

Trigonometry & Sets Easy

  • Main identities; sin, cos, tan, their inverses and graphs; right triangles.
  • Inclusion, union, intersection, complement.
  • Cartesian product.

How it appears on Bocconi: Short identity checks and Venn-diagram counting; rarely more than one or two questions.

05

Combinatorics (Discrete Mathematics) Hard

  • Permutations and combinations, with and without repetition.
  • Sum rule and product rule.
  • Counting with constraints (‘at least one’, ‘not adjacent’).

How it appears on Bocconi: Committees, codes and seating plans. The complement (‘total minus none’) is usually the fastest route.

06

Probability & Statistics Hard

  • Union and intersection of events; total probability; conditional probability and Bayes' theorem.
  • Absolute, relative, joint and conditional frequencies from tables or diagrams.
  • Mean, median, mode and measures of dispersion.

How it appears on Bocconi: Two-stage scenarios (‘a randomly chosen student studied abroad — what is the probability that…?’) and frequency tables read as conditional probabilities.

Bocconi Mathematics Sample Questions & Elimination Tactics

See how Bocconi mathematics questions are built and how disciplined elimination avoids the −0.2 penalty:

01Probability · Bayes' TheoremQuestion 1
At a university, 60% of students take Economics and 40% take Law. 30% of the Economics students and 15% of the Law students spend a semester abroad. A student chosen at random has spent a semester abroad. What is the probability that the student takes Economics?
Pick an answer to see the explanation
02Analytic Geometry · Line & ParabolaQuestion 2
For which values of kk does the line y=2x+ky = 2x + k meet the parabola y=x2y = x^2 in two distinct points?
Pick an answer to see the explanation
03Combinatorics · ‘At Least One’Question 3
A committee of 3 people is chosen from 5 economists and 4 lawyers. How many different committees include at least one lawyer?
Pick an answer to see the explanation

5 Most Common Mistakes in Bocconi Mathematics

Recurring conceptual and tactical errors that cost students crucial points:

01

Joint vs conditional probability

‘Studied abroad and takes Economics’ is not ‘takes Economics given studied abroad’. Divide by the probability of the condition.

02

Tangent vs secant

Two points need Δ>0\Delta > 0, tangency Δ=0\Delta = 0. Options with ≥ instead of > are planted.

03

Double counting ‘at least one’

Use the complement: total minus the cases with none.

04

Inequality sign flips

Multiplying by a negative number or taking a logarithm with base < 1 reverses the inequality.

05

Spending too long on one item

75 minutes for 50 mixed questions is 90 seconds each. Skip, flag and return; a blank costs 0, a wrong answer −0.2.

Study roadmap

10-Week Strategic Study Roadmap

Weeks 1–2

Diagnostic & Foundations

Take a timed diagnostic; rebuild algebra, percentages and basic logic, and note every error type.

Weeks 3–5

Mathematics Core

24 of the 50 questions are Mathematics. Work through algebra, analytic geometry, probability and combinatorics in the order of the frequency table.

Weeks 6–7

Reasoning Sections

Drill Reading, Numerical Reasoning and Critical Thinking with timed sets of 10–15 questions; keep an error log by question type.

Weeks 8–9

Full Mocks

One full 50-question, 75-minute mock per week with mixed topic order, exactly as on the real test.

Week 10

Final Polish

Re-do your error log and fix your skip-or-answer rule: −0.2 for a wrong answer, −0.33 on 3-option critical-thinking items.
